Restaurants in Northwest Hills

Dining in Northwest hills in Austin offers fast food to fine dining. The Boulevard Grill is the local ‘Cheers Bar.’  You can watch sports on their many TV’s or play a game of darts or pool. They have 2 for 1 meals most days and offer a smorgasbord of hamburgers. I’ve tried most of them. Believe it or not, the  HEB grocery store has a Jewish deli. Their chicken salad sandwich is one of my favorites. El Arroyo is one of the Tex Mex restaurants in the neighborhood. It’s a good place for happy hour. Kneaded Pleasures has very good salads and baked goodies. There are three Asian Restaurants. Chinatown is located at Greystone and Loop 1. Musashino is a Sushi restaurant located below Chinatown that my friends who eat sushi seem to like. I used to be a Microbiologist, so I don’t eat raw fish. China Sea the other Asian restaurant is located on Far West Boulevard. It’s a quiet place to have lunch and talk business if you need.  On Mesa Boulevard there are three good places to eat. Mirabelle has really good food.  They have wine dinners occasionally, that showcase their chef’s talents. I’ve been to one of the wine dinners and each course was explained by the chef along with the wine that complimented the course. It was a fun evening.  Mesa Ranch is across the street from Mirabelle’s. They offer wild game and good salads.  They also have happy hour with live music.   Mangia Pizza is the other restaurant on Mesa Drive.  I like their hamburgers and fries, but most people seem to go for the deep dish pizza. If you want a very good taco, try Torchy’s Tacos on Spicewood Springs Road.  It’s not your typical taco. Of course there is also Wendy’s, McDonalds, Quisnos subs and Starbucks.

Eastside Cafe

There is a little restaurant located in a house on Manor Road east of IH 35 that is one of Austin’s treasures.  The food is fresh and very good. If you go at lunchtime expect a wait. They have a little gift shop called Pitchforks and Tablespoons to browse in while you wait for your table. It also offers take out foods from the cafe if you want to sit on one their benches under a big shade tree and eat your meal. Eastside Cafe also has a very large garden of wonderful organically grown vegetables that is fun to walk around and smell the smells. There is a big bay leaf bush that I can’t seem to keep my hands off. If you’ve never smelled fresh bay leaves, you need to mash one in your fingers and take a big whiff. The cafe has a chalkboard of the daily specials. I always order something from the chalkboard so I can’t speak about the regular menu. I’ve never been disappointed with my choice. Their menu is eclectic with vegetarian entrees as well as meat. Most of their produce is bought, but they always have something fresh from their garden on the chalkboard. I usually opt for something spicy. Take a ride over to East Austin and check out this wonderful restaurant–you won’t be disappointed.

Old Pecan Street Festival

This year the Old Pecan Street Festival will take place the first weekend in May. It is a bi-annual event that takes place in the fall and spring each year and it is free. It is held on 6th Street in downtown Austin which used to be named Pecan Street. The whole street is blocked off to traffic and hundreds of booths are filled with arts and crafts. Artisans from all over the country come for the juried show. You can find paintings, sculptures, homemade toys and games, jewelry, clothing, furniture, and just about any decoration for your home. There are several stages for live music performances and many food booths. If you like turkey legs, you can get them here. I usually have to have a roasted corn on the cob and some kettle corn. Austinites come out in droves to walk the 6 or 7 blocks. Many come for the music, some come for the food, and some come to actually buy art.  This has been an Austin tradition for 30 years and more than 300,000 people show up. The show began as a way to help preserve historic 6th Street. I usually go once a year and enjoy the diversity of people who come. Austin is a very unique city. We have people from all walks of life, such as, old hippies, legal eagles since we are the Capitol of Texas, professors, geeks, nerds, and just plain folks. 6th Street is in the center of the music scene in Austin, which by the way, calls itself the ‘live music capital of the world.’   One can walk down the street on any given night and hear live music coming from the restaurants and bars that line both sides of the street. The festival raises money for several charities and, of course, the City of Austin appreciates the tax revenue it brings in. If you have never attended, you should put on some good walking shoes and go check it out.

Tarrytown is an area just west of downtown Austin.  It is a popular place to live because of its close proximity to the main business area of Austin.  It is made up of small bungalows and also large mansions.  It is an area that is renovating older homes and also building new homes.  Tarry House is a private club located on Bowman Avenue that is a nice place to enjoy a fine meal and also work out or play a game of tennis.  Westwood Country Club is also nearby on 35th street.  It is also a tennis and swim club.  They have an excellent swim team and great tennis programs for kids.  Westwood is situated on the Colorado River and has a small marina for members use. Across the street from the club is Mayfield Park.  If you want to see peacocks, this is where you go.  Laguna Gloria art museum is also across the street.  The grounds are beautiful and worth taking the time to explore. West Austin Youth Association is just off Exposition and Enfield Drive and offers youth sports programs.  Next door is the Lions Municipal Golf Course which is one of Austin’s many public courses.    There are several parks  and restaurants located in Tarrytown as well.  As you have probably guessed, Tarrytown is a family friendly neighborhood.

Located about 30 minutes west of downtown Austin, Lakeway is a laid back neighborhood that has many recreational opportunities.  There are 4 golf courses to enjoy, as well as the World of Tennis complex.  They also have a grand swim center and workout facilities.  Lakeway Inn now has a spa for your relaxation and pampering.  It also has its own Air Park for small aircraft.  The main attraction of Lakeway, however, is the Lake.  Lake Travis is a constant level lake that abounds with water activities.  The crystal clear aquamarine water attracts sailboat and windsurfing regattas as well as competition ski boat, cruisers and house boats.  There are several Marinas and public boat ramps and public and private parks in the area.   Shopping in the area has just improved with the opening of the new 500,000 sqft Galleria Mall on highway 71 and ranch road 620.  Many of the homes in the area have spectacular views of the hills and the lake.  If you would rather have a golf course view, it is readily available.  Whatever you enjoy doing, you can usually find a group to enjoy it with.  Whether it is ballroom dancing, quilting, or playing bridge, the Lakeway neighborhood  is the place to be.  If you would like to take a look at the Lakeway area and see some of the homes located in this neighborhood, be sure to give me a call.  Dotti Driver  512-422-2873

I live in the Great Hills neighborhood which is located in Northwest Austin. It is near the Arboretum area of town that is known for its upscale shopping and dining. Many of the restaurants offer half price appetizers during happy hour. A few of my favorites are Manuel’s, Eddie V’s and Z’Tejas.  It feels like you are in old Mexico when you are sitting on the patio of Manuel’s.  Eddie V’s knows how to cook and serve seafood, and Z’Tejas is just good food. Try their jalapeno margarita for a little kick.  North by Northwest is a brew pub that also offers half price appetizers for happy hour. They have a really good blue cheeze hamburger. Trulucks is known for their fresh crab. Also in the neighborhood is P F Chang’s, Outback Steak House, and Carrabas. Rudy’s barbeque is quite good also. If you are hungry for a good pizza, try the Brick Oven.

Shopping in this part of town has just improved since the new Domain Shopping Center has opened. More shops and hotels are being added. The Arboretum shops include Restoration Hardware, Barnes and Noble, Saks, Crate and Barrel as well as Whole Foods Market. There are also several discount stores here such as Sams club, Costco, T J Maxx and Ross.

Many of the homes in the Great Hills area have golf course, greenbelt, or hill country views. There is an excellent swim team for the kids, as well as tennis and golf. A large park that is maintained by the homeowners has miles of hiking trails and a playscape for children. If you would like to know more about my neighborhood, please give me a call.  512-422-2873

Northwest Hills Austin

Northwest Hills is a very sought after neighborhood located inside the loop in North Austin. The loop is Highway 183, MoPac Blvd, and Loop 360. It is very near downtown Austin and is close to major highways to all parts of town. It is a neighborly neighborhood with lots of trees and sidewalks. The schools in this neighborhood are all excellent. Doss and Hill are both blue ribbon elementary schools that feed into Murchison Junior High. Anderson High School is a nationally acclaimed school that has the International Baccalaureate degree plan. The 40 acre Dell Jewish Community Association of Austin is also located here. There are many good restaurants in the neighborhood. The Kitchen Door is a great place to stop on the way to work and get a yummy homemade cinnamon roll. They also have good sandwiches, soups and salads, but it is mainly a take out place. If you want a good hamburger, try the Boulevard Bar and Grill. El Arroyo is the neighborhood Mexican restaurant that makes a decent margarita. Kneaded Pleasures Bakery has soups, sandwiches and salads. Try the spinach salad here. Of course there is a Starbucks if you need to meet a client or a date. The local HEB Grocery store has a dedicated kosher section and deli. Their chicken salad sandwich is very good. Homes here range in price from the mid 300’s to over 1 million. There is a lot of construction taking place in the older parts of the neighborhood. Some of the time it is the result of a complete tear down, and other times it is just a major re-modeling job. There are also new homes being built as well. Many of the homes have views of something, such as the river, hills or canyons. You will see ranch style homes here because many were built in the late 60’s and 70’s. The new construction seems to favor Tuscan architecture. There is a debate among residents about what is a typical Austin style home. There is a Mexican influence as well as some California ranch and a little Colonial here and there. I’m not sure where the Tuscan came from, but it is now all over Austin. There are also several churches in this neighborhood. Northwest Hills United Methodist, St. Theresa’s Catholic, First Presbyterian, Ascension Lutheran, and Hillcrest Baptist are ready to accept new people. There are also a couple of synagogues on the Dell campus. This neighborhood has several little shops and a post office, but it is very near some major shopping centers. The Arboretum shops are quite near and the new Domain Shopping center is just up the road at Braker and MoPac. Whether you feel the need to shop at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus or Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, you will not be far from any of them. Since Northwest Hills is not far from downtown Austin, you will be close to live performances at the UT Bass Concert Hall, as well as the Paramount Theater or the Long Center for Performing Arts. Whether you like ballet, opera, symphony or plays, you will be near to all of these venues.

Onion Creek

The Onion Creek subdivision is located just 6 miles south of Austin on IH 35.  It is within easy access to downtown Austin and also just a short drive to San Marcos.  Texas State University and the San Marcos outlet malls are an easy drive from here. Onion Creek is known for its 18 hole golf course built in the mid 70′s and designed by golfing great Jimmy Demaret.  The lifestyle here is resort style living and the largest group of homeowners are retirees. It is also a very family friendly neighborhood and the children go to Austin Independent School District schools. Blazier Elementary, Paredes Middle School ,and Akins High School.  The golf course is the main attraction, but the Onion Creek Club also has a very fine restaurant, swimming pool, gym and tennis courts.  The active homeowners association funds a 24 hour security patrol, therefore, it is a very safe neighborhood. Travel is easy from here because it is just a short drive to the Austin Bergstrom airport.   Since Onion Creek subdivision is close to IH 35, it is just a short drive to cultural events as well as shopping and dining.

Lake Austin

Lake Austin is really the Colorado River that runs through Austin.  It is the stretch of river between Tom Miller Dam and  Mansfield Dam.  There are 5 waterfront parks along this stretch of the river, the largest being Emma Long Metropolitan Park ,also known as City Park.  Boating is a favorite activity here.  It’s fun to ride down the river and look at the multimillion dollar homes that dot the shores. Water skiing is also popular because of the smooth clear water, although it can be cold if you fall.  The water in this part of the river comes from the bottom of Mansfield Dam, so the closer to the dam you are, the colder the water.  That’s a good thing in the hot summers of Austin.  Lake Austin Spa is on the lake near Mansfield Dam.  It’s a great place to get away and relax, while being pampered.  If you don’t own a boat you can rent one at Aqua Ventures, or Sun and Fun.  There are also party boats that take daily trips up the river.  These can be also rented for large parties.  There are 3 golf courses along this stretch of the river.   There are several places to eat, listen to music and enjoy boat watching.  If you want a good old fashioned hamburger, try Ski Shores.  They also have live music.  Hula Hut has a large deck near Tom Miller Dam and is a favorite happy hour spot.  Their food is a combination of Mexican and Asian cuisine.  Believe it or not, it’s good.  Mozarts is the place to go for coffee and dessert.  Homes along Lake Austin range from fishing cabins to multimillion dollar mansions.  Some are perched high on a cliff, and others are right on the water.

Allandale Neighborhood

Allandale used to be considered as being in Northwest Austin.  Now, since the city has grown so much, it is in Central Austin.  Gullett Elementary School is on Treadwell Blvd and is an excellent school. Lamar Middle School and McCallum High School are the other neighborhood schools.  McCallum is an arts magnet school.  This neighborhood has tree lined streets and plenty of activities for families.  Beverly Sheffield Park is set along Shoal Creek and is a great spot for birthday parties, office picnics or just playing with your kids.  There is a little pond that has ducks, so bring along some bread and let the children have fun feeding them.  There is also an olympic sized swimming pool, wading pool, tennis courts and playscape. Northwest Little League park is on Great Northern Blvd and has several baseball fields.   There is a large off the leash dog park that surrounds a water run off area between Shoal Creek Blvd and Great Northern Blvd.  There is also a hiking, biking bridge over MoPac to Far West Blvd here. There are designated biking lanes along Shoal Creek Blvd and other streets in the neighborhood.  Allandale is mostly flat land, unlike other neighborhoods in Austin that are quite hilly. The Allandale Neighborhood Association is very active and is known to get things done.  They were responsible of the opening of the Yarborough Branch of the Austin Public Library on Hancock Drive, and also for new playground equipment for Beverly Sheffield Park.  Northwest Recreation Center on Northland offers many programs for families, teens and toddlers, including exercise, dance, arts and crafts, weight rooms, volleyball, and table tennis.  Homes in this neighborhood range in price from the high 200′s to 600′s. To search for homes in Allandale, please visit my website.
